About us
ODEON Cinemas are now in Ireland
ODEON, the largest cinema chain in Europe now has 10 cinemas in the Republic of Ireland.
In March 2012 the state -of- the art cinema ODEON Point Village opened with Ireland's first ISENSE screen; a technological masterpiece with a 3 storey high screen, ultra sharp digital imagery and 24 channel sound.
Since then ODEON have carried out the rebranding of the 9 UCI and Storm cinemas, with new-look ODEONs now launched in Blanchardstown, Coolock, Stillorgan, Waterford, Limerick, Cavan, Naas, Newbridge and Portlaoise.
ODEON brings many new features to the Irish market place, including the amazing ISENSE experience at ODEON Point Village and now also at ODEON Blanchardstown, and Costa Coffees at Point Village, Stillorgan, Limerick and Waterford.
The first UCI opened on the outskirts of Dublin in 1990 and the first Storm cinema opened in Cavan 11 years later in 2001. By 2006, the number of UCI and Storm cinemas had grown to 8 cinemas, and in September 2006 they were combined under the ownership of the Irish company Entertainment Enterprises. By 2011, the UCI and Storm cinema chains had grown to 9 cinemas, with UCI Cinemas serving over 2 million guests per year and Storm Cinemas becoming one of the fastest growing regional cinemas chains in Ireland.
In May 2011, the Storm cinema chains were purchased by the ODEON & UCI Cinemas Group combining UCI and Storm's 20 years experience of the Irish marketplace with ODEON's cinema heritage and knowledge. The ODEON & UCI Cinemas Group is the largest cinema operator in Europe and the largest in the world outside of the Americas, operating cinemas in Spain, Germany, Austria, Italy, Portugal and under the ODEON brand in the UK. ODEON was founded in the UK in 1930 by Oscar Deutsch, and then acquired in 1941 by J Arthur Rank who had interests in film production and distribution. ODEON remained a part of the Rank Organisation for a further 58 years. An extensive re-branding campaign in 1998 further re-enforced ODEON's position and introduced "Fanatical About Film" to our guests. The re-branding and refurbishment campaign culminated in the £3million upgrade of our UK flagship cinema, the ODEON Leicester Square. After a period to time under the ownership of Cinven, which merged the newly re-branded ODEON chain with their existing ABC cinema chain, ODEON was then sold to a consortium of investors including WestLB, The Entertainment Group and Robert Tchenguiz.
In 2004, the private equity firm Terra Firma acquired the UK ODEON cinema chain in September, and the European United Cinemas International cinema group in October to form the "ODEON and UCI Cinemas Group". With 10 cinemas in Ireland, ODEON is looking forward to an exciting period of development in the Republic during which it will continue to build on its unique position as the number one cinema chain in the UK and Ireland.
