Release Date: 10/01/20

Director: Sam Mendes

Starring: George MacKay, Dean-Charles Chapman, Benedict Cumberbatch, Colin Firth

Story: With the clock ticking, two young soldiers must cross enemy lines to deliver a message that could save the lives of a battalion of 1,600 British men.

Why it's a must-see: Every time you think the World War genre has been elevated to untouchable heights, someone goes and tops it. Sam Mendes’ forthcoming portrait of two lance corporals on a virtual suicide mission behind enemy lines is visceral and raw, dropping viewers in amongst the mud, rats and rattle of gunfire.

Release Date: 24/01/2020

Director: Armando Iannucci

Starring: Dev Patel, Hugh Laurie, Tilda Swinton, Ben Whishaw

Story: Armando Iannucci’s wonderfully funny adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic sees Slumdog Millionaire’s Dev Patel playing the titular dreamer, with Tilda Swinton as his formidable great-aunt.

Why it's a must-see: Dev Patel has already threatened to join the Best Actor pantheon with 2016’s Oscar-nominated Lion – his turn as Charles Dickens’ own favourite character could take him all the way. Save a little space in the trophy cabinet, though, because with director Armando Iannucci’s flair for funny, the DC table could also be clinking glasses in the Best Adapted Screenplay category.

Release Date: 31/01/2020

Director: Melina Matsoukas

Starring: Daniel Kaluuya, Jodie Turner-Smith, Bokeem Woodbine

Story: Daniel Kaluuya’s Slim and Jodie Turner-Smith’s Queen endure the first date from hell when they are pulled over by an agitated cop. A struggle ensues, and Slim ends up shooting the officer in self-defence, in the process changing his and Queen’s lives forever.

Why it's a must-see: It’s staggering that Queen & Slim is Melina Matsoukas’ directorial debut: the 38-year-old doesn’t miss a beat in this rom-crim manhunt drama, centred on an African-American couple who hit the road after killing a cop in self- defence. The two leads – Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith – are certainly statuette-worthy, but for the movie’s street-level vision of modern America, Best Cinematography might be the one.

Release Date: 27/12/2019

Director: Greta Gerwig

Starring: Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Timothée Chalamet, Florence Pugh

Story: A modern update of the classic story by Louisa May Alcott, Little Women follows the lives of the March sisters – Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy – as they come of age in the aftermath of the American Civil War.

Why it's a must-see: Director Greta Gerwig’s coming-of-age period piece should be in the running every time an envelope opens in Awards Season, and if Saoirse Ronan and Florence Pugh aren’t saluted for their delicate dynamic as New England sisters Jo and Amy March, Hollywood has dropped the ball.

Release Date: 01/01/2020

Director: Taika Waititi

Starring: Scarlett Johansson, Roman Griffin Davis, Sam Rockwell, Taika Waititi

Story: An ode to love rather than hate, Taika Waititi’s WW2 satire sees 10-year-old Jojo – a Hitler Youth member – discovering that his mother is harbouring a Jewish teenager in their home. He threatens to give the hideaway up to the Gestapo, but she manages to talk him round, beginning an unlikely friendship.

Why it's a must-see: If the Oscars board are brave enough to bet on a wildcard, this jet-black WW2 satire might just snag Best Adapted Screenplay. Writer-director Taika Waititi’s tale of a Hitler Youth tempted to inform on his Jew-harbouring mother is handled with heart, soul and above all, wit – it’s the funniest film about humanity’s dark side since Life is Beautiful.
