Did you know ODEON has been around for more than 85 years? Now with more than 120 cinemas and 5000 colleagues, our guests have made us the number one cinema brand in the UK and Ireland!
Every ODEON cinema is a special place. Sitting at the centre of communities across the UK, we entertain our guests and create inspiring experiences.
All 5000 of our colleagues are responsible for our success. We all take pride in our core vision and values – passion, insight, accountability, respect, trust and fun – which are at the heart of everything we do. This means that we can say with pride and confidence that our business is different.
As part of our commitment to you, our guests; our colleagues and our wider world, we’ve breathed new life into our Corporate Responsibility (CR) initiatives through 2015 and into 2016. We’ve adopted a simple strategy that we like to call “doing the right thing”. Clear priorities, responsible business practices and strong governance across five principle pillars which are championed by committees of experts who ensure we walk our talk.
Since 2007 ODEON teams in the UK and Ireland have raised more than £1 million for two children’s charities; the NSPCC and Variety. We’ve been able to achieve so much with the passion and generosity shown by our colleagues, guests and industry partners. We have a central charity committee which focuses on helping our team to raise money with more than just a whip around. Putting their money where their mouth is, our teams across the UK have baked off, auctioned off and headed off on sponsored treks up mountains.
After achieving our £1m target at the end of 2015 our charity committee started the process of electing a new charity partner. Our colleagues had their say and voted overwhelmingly to support the mental health charity Mind and their partners Action for Mental Health in Scotland and Niamh and Aware in Ireland, to help them raise funds and awareness.
We’ll be working with Mind and their partners on a number of key collaborations and involving colleagues personally through volunteering opportunities and a series of exciting events. We’ll be mobilising all of the ODEON troops to raise funds for the charities. Look out for activities happening in your local cinema to get involved!
But is it enough? No. We won't just be raising funds, we’re committed to working with our partners to raise awareness of mental health issues and the support available to all of our colleagues and guests. Did you know that MIND’s statistics show that 1 in 4 adults will experience mental health issues? With that in mind, we’ll be actively taking accountability for our colleagues’ welfare and wellbeing, promoting good mental health in the workplace and improving working practices.

This could be through our Infoline, helping us to answer more phone calls, emails or texts, or through our online peer support community ‘Elefriends’. We also fund new projects for people with mental health problems to get support in their communities through our network of local Minds.”

For Variety, our support has funded state-of-the-art customised wheelchairs, “Sunshine Coaches” and other vital pieces of equipment for children up and down the country. In recognition of the fantastic fund raising efforts of ODEON teams, Variety International awarded us its prestigious Corporate Award for outstanding support.
Our support for the NSPCC has funded a lot, like directly helping to recruit and train 31 volunteers to deliver assemblies in schools throughout the UK.
For our hard of hearing guests, we provide induction loop facilities at our sales points and dual infra red systems in our screens that can be tuned into with hearing aids.
For guests with a vison impairment, an Audio Description service is available via a lightweight, infrared headset that plays the film’s dialogue and narrates the action on-screen.
We’ve made our cinemas as accessible as possible for guests with a mobility impairment. Around 93% of our UK cinema screens are wheelchair accessible and full details of each venue are available on this website.
ODEON is proud to be a founding member of the UKCA Card scheme. Since 2004, this national initiative offers a free ticket to the person accompanying a disabled guest and is accepted at all ODEON cinemas. Last year we welcomed a fantastic 200,000 CEA card holders through our doors.
And did you know we were the first national UK chain to launch Autism Friendly Screenings? Subtle changes to the cinema environment mean guests who have sensory difficulties have a more positive experience than they would in a traditional cinema setting. These screenings have been held at 11:30am on one Sunday per month since 2011 and now play at more than 90 ODEON cinemas.
For guests who need more information, reassurance or help booking ahead, the ODEON Disability and Accessibility service offers guests the option to chat with one of our friendly operators. Guests can also use a textphone, our online contact form, or our chat option on our website to assist them with their booking or enquiry.
In 2016, the first ever screenings of Captain America: Civil War (at midnight) were shown with subtitles in 77 ODEON cinemas. This was the largest number of subtitled first shows ever offered, with a mix of 2D and 3D screenings.
This follows the success of a similar campaign for Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015. We showed 356 subtitled performances in its first week, including 46 captioned midnight performances for fans who wanted to see it the very minute it was released. We don’t just focus on the blockbusters. In the first week of Star Wars, we also showed captioned screenings of 17 other films too.
Our drive to eliminate energy waste and increase our levels of recycling has been recognised with the Carbon Trust Standard across our UK estate.
Adopting new technology and low energy equipment give us and our environment big benefits. Investment in new equipment, from printers through to air conditioning units, is reducing our energy consumption. We’ll continue to focus on energy management with our regional Energy Champions adopting and sharing the best ideas across our cinemas.
Did you know?
In the UK and Ireland, our recycling levels have soared from 20% to 50% in 2014 and this figure has continued to increase through 2015 to 55%. In the coming years, as we look for ways to improve our waste management, we expect this to keep climbing.
Our state-of-the-art cinema in Milton Keynes opened in early 2015. It’s the first multiplex cinema in the UK to be awarded a “BREEAM excellent” rating. BREEAM is a design and assessment method for sustainable buildings to ensure sites are built to an environmentally-friendly standard.
The Milton Keynes – or should that be Greens?- cinema is “lit by the sun” – with 286m2 surface area of solar panels providing 85% of the electricity used to light the building. The cinema recycles 90% of its waste, and water consumption has been reduced by approximately 40% compared to similar cinemas by using low flush toilets.
And we adopt a ‘high performance’ culture that keeps us focused on doing our best at work. We take responsibility for our own actions, while being supported by our managers with regular feedback and review sessions, and clear career development plans.
As a company, we’re committed to colleague engagement – making sure everyone knows what’s happening and is fully involved. We’ve implemented a number of initiatives that support improvements in engagement.

Our open and honest “How’s it going” meetings with colleagues, from cinema hosts to our CEO, provide an essential feedback mechanism. Our “Lend a Hand” initiative gives our office teams a chance to help out in their local cinemas during busy periods, supporting their colleagues and crucially, expanding their understanding of the heart of our business, our guests!
All of our colleagues are encouraged to innovate, bringing ideas to the management team and to contribute even more to the continued success of our business.

As our policy is to ‘do the right thing’, we ask our suppliers to do the same, and have a group-wide Code of Conduct for all our suppliers to follow. We are proud that many of our suppliers such as Danone, Ben & Jerry’s and Coca Cola have strong CR credentials. We regularly conduct a full review of all official signage for our products to ensure our guests have all the facts and figures they need to make an informed decision about the products they buy and the snacks they enjoy. Did you know?
In the last two years we’ve added Snog, Metcalfes and Innocent Drinks to our range, growing our guests’ goodness glow. We were the first UK cinema chain to stop selling 1 litre drinks.
ODEON continues to introduce new products on both a permanent and trial basis to develop the range of healthier snacking options.
One of the synonymous snacks of cinema is popcorn, and we’re freshly popping our own popcorn in coconut oil at an increasing number of sites.
Many of these initiatives are included as part of ODEON’s commitment to the Department of Health’s “Public Health Responsibility Deal” to improve public health. Having joined the deal in 2012, we continue to commit to six big health pledges around food and alcohol, including out of home calorie labelling, reformulation of products to reduce salt, tackling under age alcohol sales and alcohol labelling.

Following a successful pilot scheme in London during the first six months of 2015, the ODEON & UCI group has launched two new Innovation Labs in London and Barcelona, two of the most vibrant digital technology hubs in Europe.
The iLabs are the white coats of our strategic programme. They represent research and development and aim to pioneer the most innovative cinematic experience of the future. Whether it be pushing the boundaries of insight, data or technology, the iLabs are our test bed of forward thinking digital and retail services for our guests.

We have always worked closely with industry bodies to combat the risk of film piracy to conserve the future health of the film industry.
The Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT) is the UK’s leading trade organisation established to protect and represent the interests of its members’ intellectual property.
Established in 1983, FACT works closely with statutory law enforcement agencies to combat all forms of piracy and members include global and UK film distributors, TV broadcasters and sport rights owners.
The copyright infringing film content obtained for distribution via the internet and the production of illegal DVDs is predominantly obtained from illegal recording in cinemas and we work closely with FACT to develop processes and systems to reduce this risk.
With advances in technology and as recording devices get smaller, the threat gets bigger. ODEON is constantly updating our procedures and system to ensure that we can tackle this growing threat. We have a strong programme in place to combat, disrupt and (where applicable) report the illegal recording of film content to the police and other regulatory bodies.
We ask for the help of all of our guests to protect against these crimes and report any suspicious activity observed to our cinema hosts.
