Thor: Love And Thunder backstory – what do you need to know before the Thor 4 release on July 7th?

Remember the last time we saw Thor? It was the finale of 2019’s Avengers: Endgame and Chris Hemsworth’s well-fed thunder god was jetting off with the Guardians Of The Galaxy to dimensions unknown. Marvel has kept us guessing ever since, leaving us to imagine Drax and Thor bickering over bunks, and Rocket getting up to his old tricks by soiling the Asgardian prince’s pillow.

First came the Thor teaser (read our trailer breakdown). Now, on July 7th, Thor: Love And Thunder tells the next chapter.

Even during a bumper year of MCU releases – from the recent Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness right up to November’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – this fourth outing for the statuesque space viking might be the hottest ticket of all.

The big question is, can Thor: Love And Thunder top 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, ranked by many connoisseurs as the best-ever MCU movie?

Actually, it might be even better, director Taika Waititi told Entertainment Weekly. “Ragnarok felt a bit like a party. It was quite festive. This one is still fun, and it’s got moments of being over the top, but thematically, it’s about something a bit deeper than the last film. It’s not a serious film, and it’s not a drama, but we do deal with ideas that I think a lot of humans deal with – universal themes about love and loss and our place in the world.

Thor: Love And Thunder story – what happens in Thor: Love And Thunder?

The usual MCU secrecy laws apply to Thor 4, with everyone involved having their jaws wired shut in the months leading up to release. That said, when it comes to plot, there’s more meat on the bone than we’d normally get.

Taika Waititi has floated the premise of Thor undergoing a “midlife crisis, trying to figure out his purpose,” The recent Thor: Love And Thunder trailer backed that up, showing the hero hoping for a peaceful existence spent staring wistfully into sunsets.

Don’t worry, that won’t last long. Thanos might be gone, but a terrifying new villain has risen up the ranks. And we really do mean terrifying. The first footage of Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher depicts the Batman star as a chalk-faced, needle-toothed, white-shrouded nightmare who could have just walked off the set of a horror movie shoot.

In my humble opinion,Waititi told AP News, “we have probably the best villain that Marvel’s ever had in Christian Bale.

Thor: Love And Thunder villain – who is Gorr The God Butcher?

A relatively recent addition to the Marvel canon, Gorr was dreamt up by writer Jason Aaron and artist Esad Ribić, debuting in 2013’s Thor: The God Of Thunder comic book Issue #1.

But the villain’s backstory is long and dark, with Gorr swearing bloody vengeance on all gods after his family were forsaken and left to die on a barren planet. As we hear him mutter in the new Thor: Love And Thunder trailer: “The only ones who gods care about is themselves.

Thor: Love And Thunder cast – who are the stars of Thor 4?

The cinematography, the SFX, the flying goats pulling airborne galleons: none of it would be worth a thing without Chris Hemsworth at the heart of the franchise. Since the Thor series lightened up with Thor: Ragnarok, the Aussie actor has nailed that elusive sweet-spot between action and comedy, playing the Asgardian prince as simultaneously heroic and hapless.

This time around, it’s whispered that Hemsworth will bring even more humour to the role. Take it from co-star Karen Gillan (who plays the Guardians’ foe-turned-ally, Nebula). “He’s even more hilarious than he was last time.

Speaking of funny, it’s a treat to see Jeff Goldblum on the Thor: Love And Thunder cast list. The Hollywood legend will reprise his role as the Grandmaster, a sadistic monster with, er, that, ah, unmistakable Goldblum phrasing. “I love that character,” he told GQ, “and I can’t say anymore.

Clearly, Thor will need a crew to take Gorr on. There’s the Guardians, of course, comprising Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Drax (Dave Bautista), Groot (Vin Diesel), Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and Mantis (Pom Klementieff).

But could help also come from Russell Crowe’s Zeus, all-powerful ruler of the Olympian gods? Let’s hope so. After all, in the latest Love And Thunder trailer, he’s shown to have the power to strip Thor butt-naked with just a flick of the wrist. Could be useful…

Thor: Love And Thunder returning characters – what can we expect from Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie and Natalie Portman’s Mighty Thor?

The Thor franchise has always been far more than a giant sloshing bucket of testosterone. Female characters have shaped the narrative from the start, and Thor: Love And Thunder doubles down, with Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie now installed as the leader of New Asgard, but surely ready to get back to ass-kicking ways.

Speaking to The Wrap about Valkyrie’s trailblazing role as an openly LGBTQIA Marvel character, Thompson was proud of the film’s progressive tone. “It’s totally exciting. We talk so much about representation and obviously, in terms of the LGBTQIA community, there’s still so much work to be done. But if you look at the comics in the canon, there are so many queer characters.

Even more prominent in the Thor: Love And Thunder trailer is Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster, who is now gunned-up and a superhero in her own right, known as the Mighty Thor. It’s a big change for a character who started out in a lab coat for 2011’s Thor. “You don’t want Natalie coming back and playing that same character who’s walking around with science equipment,” says Waititi. “That’s boring. You want her to be part of the adventure.

We’ve already seen from the Love And Thunder trailer that Jane is strong enough to wield Thor’s powerful Mjölnir war hammer. But there’s a price to pay: every time Jane does so, her body rejects the chemotherapy treatment she’s undergoing for breast cancer. Like Waititi says, this film has big laughs, but also burning love and the fear of brutal loss.

Thor: Love And Thunder trivia – what are some fun facts about Thor 4?

♦ According to Hemsworth’s long-standing trainer, Luke Zocchi, the star got “the biggest he’s ever been” for Thor: Love And Thunder, achieving a weight of 105 kilos and eating eight times a day on the movie shoot just to maintain his muscle mass.

Did you know: Christian Bale is the second actor to play Batman before appearing in the MCU as a villain. The first? That was Michael Keaton, who played Adrian Toomes/Vulture in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.

♦ After appearing in Thor: Ragnarok, Matt Damon will again cameo as an Asgardian actor playing Loki. But it’s actually the third time the Bourne star has represented the god of mischief – he took on the role for the first time back in 1999’s Dogma.
