You’ve watched the Uncharted trailer, now go off the map with our explorer’s guide…

What’s the backstory to the new Uncharted movie?

Hang up your hat, Indiana Jones. Stand down, Smolder Bravestone. The action-adventure genre just got a shot in the arm. This is Uncharted: the new Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg movie that’s faster than a rolling boulder and sharper than a poison-tipped dart fired from the mouth of an ancient Inca statue.

As any self-respecting gamer will remind you, the Uncharted film isn’t completely out of the blue. If you owned a Sony PlayStation back in 2007, you’d have pulled countless all-nighters lost in the original video game, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, which launched the series and introduced us to its intrepid heroes, Nathan ‘Nate’ Drake and Victor ‘Sully’ Sullivan.

Since then, Uncharted has chalked up ten games, shipped over 41 million units and created a whole universe packed with pirates, seaplanes, sandstorms and cursed treasure. But the saga was always crying out for a movie adaptation, and now director Ruben Fleischer helms an Uncharted film so exciting that your entire body will be one big goosebump.

What’s the Uncharted film plot?

While last year’s Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City stayed faithful to the video game plot, Fleischer tips his hat to Drake’s Fortune but lets the Uncharted movie plot march to its own drum.

The Uncharted characters you know and love are here. Tom Holland plays Nate Drake: a streetwise thief working undercover as a barman while he plots his next score. Nate finds a kindred spirit in heist veteran Sully (Mark Wahlberg) and the fast friends hatch a plan to hunt down the fabled treasure of Ferdinand Magellan, missing for more than 500 years.

“In Uncharted,” explains Holland in this behind-the-scenes video feature, “Nate and Sully go to the world’s most incredible locations. We’re hunting down ancient treasures, which leads to some pretty insane stunts.

The rewards are off the charts, with a glittering $5 billion haul up for grabs – and maybe even a chance for Nate to find his long-lost brother. But so are the risks. Nate and Sully will have to trot the globe, decipher a trail of fiendish clues and dodge booby traps at every turn. They’ll also need to outwit purring billionaire psychopath Moncada (Antonio Banderas), who believes he is the rightful heir – and will cheerfully murder anyone who says different.

Who are the stars of the Uncharted cast?

Tom Holland might just be the world’s hardest-working action star. Just weeks after we saw him face off against a pack of historic baddies in Spider-Man: No Way Home, the British actor is back in a role that’s even more bruising. “I play Nathan Drake,” says Holland in the video interview. “He’s resourceful, witty, great with a riddle, lives for adventure, and he’s the greatest treasure-hunter of all time.

If you’ve come expecting Peter Parker, you’ll be surprised by the beefcake in the Uncharted trailer. “All I did was eat and train, eat and train, eat and train,” Holland told Total Film of his prep. “To put a bit of timber on, make me look not like a child next to Mark."

Ah, yes – Mr Wahlberg. The Ted star is ripped as ever, but it’s the raw charisma he brings to Sully that makes the Uncharted trailer zing. “It’s an origin story,” he told Collider, “so it’s meeting Nate and Sully and seeing them start to partner up and develop that relationship.

Who else will I see in the Uncharted trailer?

Boys will be boys – but the rogue element in the Uncharted cast is Grey’s Anatomy star Sophia Ali, playing Chloe Frazer. A reckless and devious treasure hunter, Chloe could be the key to Nate and Sully finding the loot – if she doesn’t leave them to the crocodiles. “Chloe is such a badass in the games,” says Ali, “that I wanted to be able to do that with the stunts.

Less is known about Braddock (the character doesn’t feature in the games). But with Californian actress Tati Gabrielle coming into the project off the back of hit sci-fi/supernatural shows The 100 and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, we’re expecting great things. Based on the Uncharted trailer – in which she holds a knife to Sully’s throat – Braddock is likely a henchwoman to Antonio Banderas’s evil kingpin, and not a woman to mess with.

What’s the best moment in the Uncharted trailer?

Take your pick. With Fleischer’s action credits including Venom and Zombieland, the director knows how to stop you breathing with a heart-in-mouth stunt sequence, and make you feel the impact of a collision in your bones.

There’s the heart-stopping moment when Holland leaps from a high balcony into a tangle of strobe lights. There’s the thrilling fight on an airborne Spanish galleon as it’s choppered through the jungle. And our personal favourite? The eye-popping scene when Holland awakes to find himself tangled in a cargo net as it trails behind a speeding plane. Even Spider-Man might chicken out of that one.

It’s the first time I feel like I’m in a movie that’s a movie, y’know?” says Wahlberg. “When I read the script, I felt like I was reading Indiana Jones or The Thomas Crown Affair. It’s got these great elements of heist movies and adventure movies that I’ve never been a part of. So I couldn’t be more excited about it.

What’s the Uncharted release date?

Uncharted has been a long time coming – but that will make this unashamed old-school adventure movie feel like even more of an event when it finally arrives on February 11th. Total Film has dubbed Uncharted “Bond crossed with Indy”, and if that sounds like your dream ticket, Holland and Wahlberg would be delighted to have you ride shotgun.

Uncharted means something brand new, never-before-seen, it hasn’t ever been put on a map,” says Wahlberg in the behind-the-scenes video interview. “And that’s what this movie is,” picks up Holland. “The story is uncharted. The action is uncharted. The locations are uncharted. Get ready for the adventure of a lifetime…
