Release date: 21 September

Directed by: Eli Roth
Starring: Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, Owen Vaccaro

Plot in brief: This spine-tingling adventure tells the story of young Lewis Barnavelt (Vaccaro), an orphaned boy who goes to live with his warlock uncle Jonathan (Black) in a creepy old house with a sinister tick-ticking heart. With certain doom on the horizon, can Owen help save the world?

Fun fact: The film is based on John Bellairs’ 1973 gothic horror novel, which is the first in a 12-strong series of books.

Why it shouldn’t be missed: Director Roth is a big name in the horror genre having helmed the blood-drenched Hostel (rated 18 with very good reason). The House With a Clock in its Walls is FAR MORE family friendly, but it still has plenty of jumps and a few whopping twists. If you liked the Harry Potter series and the first Fantastic Beasts movie, then you’ll adore this.

Release date: 3 October

Directed by: Ruben Fleischer
Starring: Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Woody Harrelson

Plot in brief: “You should be extremely afraid!” Directed by Zombieland’s Ruben Fletcher, this darkly compelling comic-book actioner see Tom Hardy (Bane in The Dark Knight Rises) playing Eddie Brock, a no-nonsense journalist who becomes the host for a violent alien symbiotic named Venom.

Fun fact: Venom was voted 33rd in Empire Magazine’s ‘Greatest Comic-Book Characters’ feature.

Why it shouldn’t be missed: Venom is one of Marvel’s darker creations – and director Fleischer certainly doesn’t skimp on the guts and gore. With Hardy playing his dual role to perfection and Michelle Williams excelling (as always) as his District Attorney girlfriend, expect this movie to be anything but box office poison.

Release date: 12 October

Directed by: Karey Kirkpatrick, Jason Reisig
Starring: Zendaya, Channing Tatum, Gina Rodriguez

Plot in brief: This terrific animated adventure offers an alternative take on the legend of Bigfoot. Set in the remote and wintry wilds, it tells the story of a yeti scientist named Migo who, with the help of a few determined friends, sets out to prove that ‘humans’ (or smallfoots) really do exist.

Fun fact: Smallfoot features an original song by Niall Horan (of One Direction fame) entitled ‘Finally Free’.

Why it shouldn’t be missed: Featuring an all-star vocal cast that includes Channing Tatum, James Corden and Danny DeVito, plus a funny, sweet storyline that will have you laughing out loud, Smallfoot is an absolute delight.

Release date: 12 October

Directed by: Ari Sandel
Starring: Madison Iseman, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Wendi McLendon-Covey

Plot in brief: Based on the hugely popular children’s horror novels by R. L. Stine, this spooky-but-fun sequel to the 2015 Jack Black-starrer sees the evil ventriloquist’s dummy Slappy causing havoc on Halloween. Can 17-year-old Sarah, her brother Sonny and his best friend Sam stop their scary adversary before he ruins All Hallows Eve for ever?

Fun fact: Between them, the 62 Goosebumps books have sold an astonishing 400 million copies.

Why it shouldn’t be missed: There’s no Jack Black this time, but don’t let that put you off, because this is still a monstrously entertaining sequel will wonderful performances from the young cast. You’d be a dummy to miss it!
